Sperrin Og history in 2010
The club history for the 2010 season
The senior ladies began training in early April under the management of Michael Fox, Michael John Mc Dermott and Daryl Mc Cullagh; hoping for success in the Junior League and Championship.
In the first round of the championship, the
ladies faced Kildress in Loughmacrory. After a nervous start, the girls
dominated the game and won the game convincingly. In the semi final stage of
the competition, Aghyaran were the opponents and despite all the girl’s best
efforts, Aghyaran came out on top.
In the league, straight wins over Badoney,
Drumragh, Omagh St.Endas, Aghyaran, Donaghmore and Kildress ensured that the
senior team secured top four play offs for a league title spot. Once again,
Donaghmore provided the opposition in the league semi final and a convincing
win provided the gateway to the league final spot against rivals Aghyaran. This
game was played with great intensity and determination by both sides, however
luck was not on our side and Aghyaran won the game by the narrowest of margins.
Thanks must go to the management team of Michael, Michael John and Daryl and we
can only look forward with the belief that this team can only improve and
hopefully promotion to division two will be secured next year.
Under 16 Ladies
Success breeds success and this is
certainly true in regard to our Under 16 and Under 14 Ladies teams. Our Under
16 team began training in June under the management of Pat Clarke and Nuala
Clarke. The girls successfully progressed to the Championship Final with wins
over Sigersons Strabane and Fr. Rocks, Cookstown. In the final, Drumragh
provided the opposition on a cold October’s afternoon in Gortin. Despite a
spirited performance from the girls, they were beaten by a much stronger side and
the girls can take heart from the fact that they can learn from their loss and
build upon this for next year.
The league campaign provided a much more
successful crusade with convincing wins over Sigersons, Mna na Deirge, Fr.
Rocks, Drumragh, Edendork, Coalsiand and Pomeroy. The girls faced Pomeroy in
the league final and an outstanding performance by the entire team provided the
girls with a well deserved league title. Congratulations must go to the
management and players for all their hard work and dedication throughout the
year.
Under 14 Ladies
The Under 14 Ladies enjoyed enormous
success in 2010. Under the management of James Tuohey, Leo Donnelly, Helen
Clarke, Anne Coyle and Patricia Tuohey. The girls played brilliant football
which was envied by all other under 14 teams who they met on the league and
championship campaign. The girls met Mna na Deirge and Sigersons on the pathway
to the Champioship Final where they met Fr. Rocks. The girls had an impressive
win over the Cookstown side in a game where they dominated every position on
the field. The girls beat Drumragh, Beragh, Edendork, Fr. Rocks, Mna na Deirge,
Fintona, Loughmacrory and Sigersons in the league which secured them with the
league title for the 2010 season.
More importantly, the team also competed in
the Feile 2010. In the Tyrone section of the Feile, the team was unlucky to
lose the Tyrone final by a point to St. Macartans. Despite this defeat, the
girls progressed to the Feile which was hosted by Tyrone, Derry and Donegal. We
hosted Claregalway Ladies in the first weekend of July where a great exhibition
of football was displayed by all participating teams. A weekend of events saw
Sperrin Óg face Claregalway in the first stages of the feile. The girls were
defeated by a much stronger side and despite this defeat the girls gave
spirited displays against Clan na Gael and The Banner, Co. Clare. The girls
failed to progress to the final stages of the Feile. Thanks must go to everyone
who helped make this weekend such a success, especially all the parents who
accommodated the Claregalway team who eventually went on to win the Feile
outright in the girls section. Thanks must also go to the volunteers who helped
prepare the food for all the teams throughout the weekend, especially Alice
Ferrity, Fiona Meenan and Rosie Morris whose help made the weekend such a
success. Thank you girls!!
Thanks and congratulations must also go to
the management team of James, Leo, Helen, Anne and Patricia for their
enthusiasm and dedication throughout the year! Thank you!
Under Twelve Ladies
This group of girls were managed by Vincent
Hollywood, Plunkett Mc Aleer, Rosie Morris, Rosemary Coyle and Patricia Coyle.
The girls had a very successful year beating Badoney, Sigersons, St. Dympna’s
Dromore, St. Enda’s Omagh and Newtownstewart in the group stages of the
competition. In the semi final stages the girls were beaten by Aghyaran by the
narrowest of margins. Again thanks must go the management team and parents who
helped out throughout the year. Thank You!
Under Ten Ladies
The Under Ten Ladies competed in blitz
games throughout the year. A disappointing year with a lot of the opposing
teams dropping out in the opening stages of the competition. We can only hope
that next year that other clubs will be more organised and the girls will get
more blitz games. This is a great bunch of players who improve year on year and
thanks must go to the management team of Michaela Fox, Shaueen Ferrity, Briege
Beggs and Amy Mc Cullagh.
County Teams
Our Ladies were well represented in the County
teams in 2010. Eimear Teague and the Tyrone Senior Ladies team had huge success
in the Championship campaign where they reached the final against Dublin. The
team were unsuccessful and beaten by a more experienced side in headquarters,
Croke Park. It was a proud day for Eimear and for the club and we wish Eimear
and the team all the best in the quest for the All Ireland title next year.
Eadaeoin Fox, Ciara Fox and Niamh O’Neill
were part in the Under 14 County team and Aileen Tuohey and Claire Tuohey were
successful in being selected for the Under 13 Development Team. Well done
girls! Experience on the County Teams can only benefit the players and
encourage all their club team mates to keep aiming for such heights!
