Handball Review 2010/2011
01 October 2011
Some of the highlights of the 2010/2011 season.
Girls
There was an excellent interest in handball amongst the girls with up to 12 regularly attending practice throughout most of the year. There is no doubt that if they continue to develop many of them will be able to compete this year and progress well.
Thanks must go Gerard Murphy for his continued help with coaching throughout last winter and also to the parents who provided supervision.
Any parents who are available to provide supervision with the girls this year please make it known to someone in the club. This is a very important aspect of providing suitable coaching and is required at all coaching sessions involving girls. If this responsibility is shared then each parent should only have to supervise for a couple of sessions each year.
Boys
Christopher Gillen won the Under 17 Championship in an exciting three-game encounter against Ryan Keenan in Brackey.
The Loughmacrory lad got of to a strong start and managed to weather a spirited comeback from Chrissy to take the first game 21-15.
The second game saw Gillen take advantage of Keenan’s weaker left side and with a more patient approach to closing out rallies went on to level the match, 21-12.
Chrissy carried his good form into the tie breaker and establish another early lead of 6-0. However Keenan never gave up and with a quick succession of points he quickly ate into that lead.
It would not be enough though as Chrissy regained composure and secured a well deserved 11-6 win and another Handball accolade for Greencastle.
