1984
The
Annual General Meeting was held in the Hall on 18th December.
The only changes in offices from the previous year saw Frank
Ward becoming Vice-Chairman in place of Peter Tracey. Eugene
McKenna becoming Treasurer in place of Frank Ward and John
Conway becoming Assistant Treasurer. The committee was Peter
Tracey, Mickey John McDermott, Mickey Heagney, Gerard Coyle
and Jim Kirk. The management of the team was put in the hands
of three selectors namely Peter Tracey, Sean Clarke and Frank
Ward who also appointed Johnny Glass as Captain. By now it
appeared that the "Parochial Ground" could be purchased
and it was agreed that a big push be made to raise funds as
soon as the Big Parish Draw finished.
1984
also proved to be difficult year in that many experienced
player had retired from first-team football and a number of
young players mainly from the successful Minor team Owenkillew,
which won the Tyrone Minor League in 1983, were called into
the side. The going was tough for this young team, at the
halfway stage in the league, the team found itself in a new
position in the league. Fifth from the bottom with 6 points
from 9 games and only 2 points better off than the bottom
teams. The final league table shows a record of 17 games played,
4 won, 3 drawn and 10 defeats and still fifth from bottom.
But there was a brighter future ahead following improved displays
towards the end of the season.
The
Championship was also a short lived campaign, with defeat
being the result in a preliminary round match against Donemona
on a score of 0-09 to 0-06. A poor record of not having got
past the first round since 1979 continued.
1985
The
Annual General Meeting was held in the Parochial Hall on the
9th December 1984. The only changes in Officers were Peter
Tracey replacing Frank Ward as Vice-Chairman and Francis Clarke
replacing John Conway as Assistant Treasurer. The Committee
consisted of Mickey John McDermott, Brian Hollywood and Johnny
Glass. Benny Haughey from Carrickmore was prepared to manage
the team for the 1985 season. The season began in great fashion,
with some very good displays in the Jim Devlin Cup and Frank
O'Neill Cup with clear-cut victories over Senior sides Dungannon
and Dregish being the highlights.
Disaster
struck in the league with a heavy defeat against Drumquin.
By the end of the season, Greencastle had reached a respectable
mid-table position with a record of played 17, won 8, draw
2, lost 7, 18 pts. The Championship also had a short life.
Defeat against Dunamanagh in the first round by 3-04 to 1-07.
Eventually Dunamanagh went on to win the County title.
During
1985 the huge development of out playing field got underway
and a great effort was put into organising a six-month draw,
which yielded a profit in excess of £35,000. No mean
achievement on its own.
