The
league commenced with a good winning 8 games in a row before
suffering their first defeat against Rock, incidentally the
Rock team, which went on to win the Junior Championship. The
Championship came to an abrupt end when Drumquin surprisingly
defeated Greencastle on a scoreline of 4-05 to 1-08.
Greencastle
continued on their great league run. However, the club was
pipped at the post once more when they finished just one point
behind Drumquin and Dregish, having lost just 2 matches and
drawn 1. The draw being with Dregish and 1 defeat being against
Drumquin by 2 points. To win 14 games and draw 1 game out
of 17 and finish out of the honours is rather heart-breaking.
The
reserve team also put up a very good showing, winning 6 out
of 9 league matches played.
1983

The
Jim Devlin Cup was played on a league basis at that time and
in 1983 it involved 7 games at the beginning of the year.
Greencastle finished up in second place to Glenelly in their
section, losing just one game and drawing one. In the league
in the early part of the season, Greencastle led the league
with 7 victories out of 9 games.
The
1983 Championship saw the meeting of close rivals and neighbours
Glenelly and Greencastle at Beragh. Victory went to Glenelly
after a very close hard-fought game on a score of 1-08 to
1-06. Thus the poor run in the Championship continued. Still
the league continued to be a close run affair. After a spirited
showing on the field and with the benefit of 2 points gained
in the Activities Boardroom at the hands of Newtownstewart.
Greencastle finished in joint second place with Glenelly,
thus forcing a play-off to decide the runner-up position.
The
lead-up to that play-off resembled a County Final and a huge
crowd assembled in Carrickmore on the 4th December. However,
on this occasion, Glenelly triumphed on a score of 2-03 to
0-03.
