1980
The
1980 season commenced with the usual good league run. The
first 4 games resulted in good wins and the first defeat was
suffered at the hands of Killeeshil by 2-11 to 2-07. Out of
a 15 match programme, Greencastle lost just 3 games, but that
was once again enough to put the club out of a promotion place.
The final league table was as follows:

The
championship came to an abrupt end with defeat by Urney in
the preliminary round.
1981
Another
year of high hopes began with a league meeting with newcomers
Glenelly at Glenelly. Included in the Glenelly ranks was once
Mickey Sheerin, who had for a number of years played for Greencastle.
However, the experienced Greencastle team overcame the spirited
newcomers on a scoreline of 2-07 to 0-06.
By
the time Championship came round on April 26th, it was a case
of a clash of the league leaders. Beragh were league leaders
with 10 points from 5 games with Greencastle on 7 points from
5 games. However, after a 1 point defeat on a score of Beragh
2-04 Greencastle 1-06, the Championship ambitions were dashed
for another year.
The
league positions at the end of the season show losing 4 matches
and drawing 3 out of 13 games. Three of these defeats were
by a 1 point margin as was the championship defeat, which
gives an indication of the competitive nature of Division
3 football.
