Once again Greencastle were favourites to do well in the league, but once again it was a runners-up position. Unfortunately that was not enough to earn promotion since the Championship winners came from Division 6. The first round of the Championship saw victoru over Castlederg by 0-10 to 0-07. The second round was against Mountjoy, who were unbeaten in the league. Again victory was attained by 1-06 to 0-06. Derrytresk were the semi-final opponents and again Greencastle were successful winning through to their second County Final appearance in successive years. The Greencastle team for that game was: Johnny Kirk, Gene McKenna, Peter Tracey, Mickey Heagney, M.J. McDermott, Laurence McBride, Eamon Potter, Kevin Campbell, Johnny Glass, Mickey Sheerin, Peter McDermott, Mickey Beggs, Bernard Keenan, Seamus Leddy and Martin McCullagh. Cookstown was by 1 point, but a protest by Greencastle over an irregularity in the Cookstown team resulted in a replay. In the replay, Cookstown won comfortably by 0-14 to 0-01. So for the second year, Greencastle were runners-up in both league and Championship.

1979

This was the first year in which there were 3 Divisions in the All-County League, with Division 3 being amalgamation of former Divisions 5 and 6. The team started the season in confident mood, leading the table from the start, running up 8 straight victories over Drumquin in the first round of the Championship thrown in. June was a catastrophic month as it marked the end of the great league run with a heavy defeat by Brackaville and defeat by Moy in the Championship quarter final by 1-10 to 1-06.

The competition was so close at the top of Division 3, which Greencastle finished in 4th place with 24 points from 16 games. Just 4 defeats in that marathon league of 16 gamaes.
