The preview of 1977 season was expected Greencastle to be making a strong bid for honours. More pressure would be placed on teams during the year because in 1978, the league was becoming All-County and three of the seven clubs in Division 5 would be relegated to the new Division 3.

In the first round of the Championship, Greencastle defeated Tattyreagh and Castlederg in the second round. The semi-final brought a clash with Derrytresk at Carrickmore. This resulted in victory on a score of 1-12 to 2-04. The league and Championship tally now showed a record of 11 wins from 11 games. Standing between Greencastle and that elusive first County Championship was Killyclogher with a similar record for 1977.

The panel of players for that County Final was Johnny Kirk, Eugene McKenna, Peter Tracey, Jim McCrory, Gerry McCullagh, Laurence McBride, Mickey John McDermott, Francis Keenan, Paddy McKenna, Mickey Beggs, Laurence Kirk, Mickey Sheerin, Johnny Glass, Peter McDermott, Bernard Keenan, Mickey Heagney, Perry McCrory, Martin McCullagh, Seamus Leddy, Eugene McCullagh and Raymond Bradley. The long-awaited success in the Junior Championship was not to be as Killyclogher won on a score of 0-14 to 0-03.

The long unbeaten run was over and Killyclogher defeated the team twice in the league to end any hope of promotion for 1977. 1978 was the first year of the All-County Leagues and Greencastle were not in Division 5 along with Mountjoy, Strabane, Moy, Killeeshil, Derrytresk, Newtownstewart and Mountfield.
