1973

The Committee Officers for 1973 were similar to the previous year except for Kevin Morris replacing Sean Clarke as Assistant Secretary and Paddy Warnock replacing Peter Keenan as Treasurer. The Committee members were Anthony Keenan, Bernard Keenan, Tony Teague and Francis Bradley. Team Captain Mickey Heagney, Vice-Captain Peter McDermott. Team Selectors Francis Bradley, Joe McCullagh and P.J. McDermott.

It is interesting to note that with the club now having attained Intermediate status, a team was also entered in the Junior League. The first match for the Junior team was against Gortin. How things have changed over the years.

The first Immediate league match was against Dromore. A draw was the result and indeed in the return match in Dromore, Greencastle had a great victory. This Dromore team went on to return to Senior football shortly afterwards. The 22nd April saw Greencastle compete in the St. Enda Cup against Trillick, who produced a star-studded side that later went on to win numerous Senior Championships. The final score was Trillick 1-14 Greencastle 0-06. 10 of the Trillick points came from Patsy Barrett frees. By the end of May, Greencastle topped the Intermediate League as shown:

P W L D Pts.
Greencastle 7 5 1 1 11
Urney 5 5 0 0 10
Dromore 5 4 1 0 9
Fintona 5 3 0 2 6
Clogher 6 3 0 3 6
Killyclogher 5 2 0 3 4
Pomeroy 4 1 0 3 2
Newtownstewart 5 1 0 4 2
Drumragh 6 1 0 5 2
Eskra 6 1 0 5 2

The Immediate Championship saw Greencastle drawn to meet Urney, just relegated from Senior football in the first round. That game took place in Newtownstewart and in a tough encounter, Greencastle led all through with the score standing at Greencastle 2-08 to Urney 3-00 and the last kick of the game was a fifty, which had to be scored direct to gain a drawn and it was duly converted. The replay was the following Sunday June 3rd. In the replay, Greencastle made no mistakes and went on to play Eskra on the 24th June in the Second round. This match was won on a score of 1-08 to 1-05 and the team were now in the County semi-final, where Killyman provided the opposition. Despite the high hopes of everyone connected with the club and in West Tyrone in general, Killyman defeated Greencastle in that semi-final by 2-07 by 0-06.

The final published League table shows Greencastle with 25 points from 17 games. In second place to Urney, who had played 16 games with 29 points. That was a quite considerable performance in the club's first year in Intermediate football to finish second in the league and reach the semi-final of the Championship. Time was to prove that to be the high point of the clubs achievements on the playing field as the club went into a slow decline on the playing field.
