TYRONE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. POMEROY DEFEAT GREENCASTLE

There was a great hosting of Gaels at the O'Neill Park, Dungannon, on Sunday to witness the final of Tyrone Junior Champion (1935) between Pomeroy and Greencastle Plunketts and Greencastle. Pomeroy. having swept all before them in East Tyrone Junior circles and Greencastle being worthy upholders of the game in the West, the meeting of these teams aroused the utmost enthusiasm and the match was played amid scenes of indescribable excitement. Pomeroy were the better team throughout as regards football skills and had the honour of winning the much-coveted trophy. Greencastle team was remarkable more for the earnestness of the players rather than the great merit of the football displayed and at times, their play in midfield was very weak. Pomeroy's victory was well deserved. Once they gained the measure of the opposition, the Pomeroy forwards were inclined to indulge in pretty touches near goal, and they exhibited some magnificent hand passing. Anthony McAleer, in goals who brought off many fine saves, best served the Greencastle team. While Packie McCullagh was an outstanding fullback. The Cup was afterwards presented by F.V. Quinn (Chairman of East-Tyrone District Board) to Mr. Hugh M. O'Hare, the captain of Pomeroy team. The scores in the match were Pomeroy 3-09; Greencastle 1-03.

Mr Thomas Bradley, of Coalisland was referee.

The following Sunday, Greencastle met Castlederg in the first round of the 1936 Championship. This resulted in a victory on the score Greencastle 2-08, Castlederg 1-01.

In the League, victories were becoming common once moe and by the 5th July, the league was as follows:

P W D L Pts.
Greencastle 8 5 0 3 10
Castlederg 6 4 0 2 8
Plumbridge 6 3 0 3 6
Cranagh 5 3 0 2 6
Killyclogher 4 2 0 2 4
Gortin 4 2 0 2 4
Brackey 5 0 0 5 0

The second round of the Championship was against Plumbridge at Greencastle and resulted in a victory for Greecastle by 2-05 to 1-01. The final of the West Tyrone Championship was to be between Greencastle and Killyclogher on Sunday 8th November at Gortin. This match was postponed on account of bad weather. There is no account of it ever having been played, but Greencastle were recognised as West Tyrone Champions and for the second year runnning, they reached the Tyrone Final.

Meanwhile the Junior League went to a very close finish, with Greencastle being runner-ups to Castlederg, just two points behind.
