1935

The 1935 Junior League saw the number of clubs down to 5 and this included Gortin who had previously played in North Tyrone. By the beginning of June, the league table was as follows:

  P W L D Pts.
Greencastle 3 3 0 0 6
Killyclogher 5 3 2 0 6
Mountfield 4 2 2 0 4
Gortin 4 1 3 0 2
Omagh 2 0 2 0 2

Those 3 victories were against Gortin, Mountfield and Killyclogher. In the McAleer Cup, Carrickmore overcame Greencastle after a good display from both sides.

The return league match between Mountfield and Greencastle was refixed after the referee reported that Greencastle arrived at Mountfield but Mountfield did not field. Mountfield officials told the referee that they had neither team nor field to play in. On Sunday 1st September, Greencastle had a good league victory over Omagh II at Lisnamallard on a score of 5-06 to 1-04.

The first round of the Junior Championship was against Killyclogher at Killyclogher on Sunday 8th September, with the assistance of a strong breeze in the first half, Greencastle led a half-time by 0-05 to 0-00. A goal in the second half sealed the game. The final score was Greencastle 1-07, Killyclogher 1-04.

In the second round, Greencastle met Mountfield. This must have been a successful venture since the West Tyrone Junior Final was between Greencastle and Gortin on November 17th. That match resulted in victory for Greencastle, but a contest took place place at West Tyrone Board lead when Gortin appealed against the game being awarded to Greencastle on two counts. The first that two Greencastle players were not properly attired and secondly that the ground was not properly marked out in that no flags were erected at the end of the lines or at the corners. The Chairman said that according to the referee's report, Gortin lost the game on both the score and on time, as they were late in arriving at the field.

Mr E. Doherty contended that Gortin should be awared the tie on the grounds stated. Mr E. McCullagh, Greencastle, said that he thought there should be give and take in competitions. It was little points like these that revealed the sportsmanship of a team. The Gortin team arrived late and by the time they arrived, some of the Greencastle players had gone home. When they did arrive, Greencastle were two played short and the two players that made up the team had little time to dress properly. He denied that there was no flags erected.

On the 9th of February 1936, the club held its Annual General Meeting. Officers elected were as follows:

President: Rev P. McGeown, PP
Chairman: Fr. O'Doherty, CC
Secretary: E.V. McCullagh
Treasurer: Fr. O'Doherty, CC
Committee: Patrick Loughran, Patrick McCrory, Patrick McCullagh, Leo McAleer, John Bradley, Charles Meenan, John Fox, Edward Tracey
Captain: E. McCullagh
Vice-Captain: P. McCullagh

The final league game of the season was against Killyclogher on the 16th February at Killyclogher. This resulted in a victory for Greencastle by 0-03 to 0-00 score. The team went through the season dropping just one point in a draw with Gortin. The final league table was as follows.

P W D L Pts.
Greencastle 7 6 1 0 13
Gortin 8 4 1 3 9
Killyclogher 8 4 0 4 8
Omagh 7 2 0 5 4
Mountfield 8 2 0 6 4

In the Junior Championship, Greencastle were fixed to meet Lifford in the North-West Final on Sunday 8th March. However, Lifford withdrew from all competitions, thus leaving Greencastle Champions of the North-West Division and into the County Final to meet Pomeroy. Therefore the 1935 season proved to be a very successful one for Greencastle and prompted the following report in the Herald by their correspondent "Gaedheal".

"The Junior League was appropriated rather easily by Greencastle last season. A team which could always field its strongest team and playing with wonderful consistency throughout the season, it did not suffer a single defeat. The nearest approach to which was a drawn game with Gortin. The Club's success is most deserving, because since its beginning, it always showed exemplary behaviour and there brilliant success reflects the interest which all members took in the Gaelic movement, especially Fr E. McCullagh who was always a whole-hearted worker in the interest of the club.

Greencastle have also reached the final of the Tyrone Junior Championship and judging by the form which they are at present showing, they will make a bold bid to secure this coveted trophy"
