IN
THE BEGINNING
1932
was to become a historic year in the annuals of the GAA. At
the beginning of the year there were a total of six clubs
in existence. The West Tyrone Convention was held on 7th January
1932 and it was decided that a public meeting would be held
in Fintona to promote a reorganisation scheme, This meeting
was held on 3rd February 1932. An advertisement for the meeting
contained the following words of Cardinal McCrory "I
put it to the young men of Ireland that the Gaelic games have
a special claim upon us as being our own, I hope the games
of the Gael will be ardently taken up and pursued."
These efforts to promote the establishment of the GAA were
very successful in that by the end of the year 1932, twenty-eight
clubs has been formed. One of these clubs was Greencastle
who played under the title Greencastle Erin's Hope.
The club was formed at a meeting in Greencastle Parochial
Hall on Monday 14th November 1932. The report of the meeting
in the Ulster Herald of the 19th November 1932 states that
an enthusiastic meeting was held in St. Patrick's Hall on
Monday night. A large number of representatives met to discuss
the formation of a Parish Club. It was decided to enter a
club in the next Junior League. The officers elected were:
President
Rev. H. McCauley C.C.
Vice President Rev. P. McGeown P.P.
Treasurer Mr. E.V. McCullagh
Secretary Mr. Maurice Rodgers PET.
A
number of friendly matches were to be arranged for the near
future.
However
during the summer of 1932 some football was already being
played. Greencastle played Dunamore, who were playing in the
East Tyrone League in 1932 in a challenge game and had also
played in a seven-a-side Tournament in Loughmacrory. It seems
that Greencastle won that competition in Loughmacrory. AFter
the formation of the club, the first challenge game appears
to have been against Killyclogher on the 8th December at Greencastle.
The final score was Greencastle 8pts. Killyclogher 3pts. The
match report states that there was a large attendance of spectators.
Referee for that match was Rev. M. Collins C.C. Killyclogher
who was a few years earlier Curate in Crock. Fr. Collins along
with Fr. James McGilligan C.C. Carrickmore and Fr. Thomas
Bradley C.C. Newtownstewart were the main driving force behind
the development of so many clubs in the early 1930's. Fr.
Malachy Morris played with Killyclogher in 1932 and P.J. McCullagh
played with Dunamore in that year and it is propably for that
reason Greencastle's first challenge games were against Dunamore
and Killyclogher.
The
first competitive match was against Carrickmore II in the
Junior Championship. This match was played at Carrickmore.
M. Morris had the privilege of scoring the first point in
competitive football. In the first half Hugh McDermott scored
a goal leaving the half time score Greencastle 1-02 Carrickmore
0-00. In the second-half with the win in their favour, Carrickmore
pressed strongly and scored 1 goal and 2 points. However a
point from E. McCullagh and a goal from a free by Malachy
Morris left Greencastle winners on a final score of 2-03 to
Carrickmore's 1-02.
The
Greencastle team was listed as follows: J. Bradley; J. Clarke;
P.J. McCullagh; P. Donnelly; F. Quinn; Peter McCullagh; Pat
McCrory; Mick Morris; Malachy Morris; E. McCullagh; Anthony
McAleer; Hugh McDermott; John Morris
On
the 18th December what would have been the County Convention
was held in St. Patrick's Hall, Dungannon. Over 300 delegates
attended and among that attendence were representatives from
Greencastle. At that convention Fr. M. Collins was elected
Honorary President of the Board.
A
return challenge game between Killyclogher and Greencastle
was played on 31st December at Killyclogher. Reports of this
march give the impression that there may have been a little
"needle" creeping in. The reporter felt that is
had the competitiveness of a championship match. He also suggested
that "fast, clever, designing, beautiful team-work of
the pattern-weaving type, it is this that delightes the crowd
and is football brought to a fine art." The end result
was that Killyclogher won by 0-12 to 0-11.
On
the 19 February 1933 a league game was played at Greencastle
against Fintona. This resulted in a win on the score of 0-08
to 0-00 to Greencastle.
The
emphasis around the early 30's was apparently on encouraging
the spread of the game and helping new club's etc. A letter
to the Ulster Herald in February 1933 is devoted to this line.
The write asks that experienced teams should not pile on the
agony against an interior team when they get on top by building
up a huge score. The editor agrees with this thinking and
suggests that when a team gets on top and have a safe score,
they should relax lest they discourage a young and weaker
team.
On
the 29th March 1933 at the monthly meeting of the West Tyrone
Board, it was found necessary to appoint a temporary Secretary
due to the impending absence for several months of the appointed
Secretary. Malachy Morris from Cashel was appointed to this
position. Malachy held this position until the end of the
1934 season.
Players
registered on 15th March 1933 were as follows: Malachy McAleer,
Leo McAleer, Patrick A. Donnelly, Peter McCullagh, Francis
Morris, Joseph Morris, Patrick J. McCullagh, Gerard McCullagh,
Edward McCullagh, Stanley McCullagh, Joseph K. Bradley, Maurice
Rodgers, Francis McAleer, Patrick Daly, Charles Conway, Charles
Deery, Charles Keenan, Patrick McKeown, Charles Conway, John
Fox, Stephen Fox, Malachy Morris, Brendan Morris, Joseph McCullagh,
Francis Quinn, Patrick Clarke, John Bradley, James Clarke,
Hugh McDermott, Peter McCullagh, Francis Conway, Hugh Conway,
Peter Conway.
A
further list registered on the 23 April 1933 was as follows:
Patrick Loughran, Mick Loughran, Francis Anthony, Peter McCrory,
Gerald McCrory, Patrick McCrory, Pat McKenna, Con McKenna,
John Michael Loughran, Francis Conway, Paddy Devlin, Charles
Quinn, Patrick Dorrian, Samuel McCann, Patrick McKenna, Hugh
Conway. Frank Conway.
The
colours registered were claret and amber.
The
first championship campaign ended on 30 April 1933 when Tattyreagh
defeated Greencastle at Tattyreagh by 2-03 to 0-00. This was
the quarter-final stage of the West Tyrone Championship and
it was a replay. Reports of that game state that the team
played well until the vicinity of the goals and nerves seemed
to play a big part. The team for that game was J. Bradley,
P. McCullagh, J. Clarke, M. Morris, P. McCrory, A. McAleer,
M. Morris and P. McCullagh.
